Creating the perfect trade show displays for your products or services can feel like a daunting task. After all, designing your trade show displays means you’ll need to juggle a variety of priorities, such as:

  • Creating eye-catching displays
  • Prominently displaying your best products
  • Making your display easy to navigate
  • Efficiently using all space without overcrowding

With all of these priorities (and more) in mind, it can feel overwhelming to prepare for even a small trade show. That’s why we at Abstracta believe in simplifying by following a few essential guidelines.

Today, we’re discussing a few essential tips for designing great trade show displays.

Tip #1: Choose “Clean” Over “Crowded”

When designing your booth, it can be tempting to try and fit in as much of your products, handouts, and marketing materials as possible. And while it’s important to maximize the use of your space, it’s critical to keep in mind that “busy” or “crowded” displays can confuse and intimidate people.

Without a clean, clear design that’s easy to understand and creates a welcoming environment, potential customers won’t come. When people look at your booth, they want to know exactly what to expect and what they’ll get out of the experience. By prioritizing a clean, low-stress environment, you can reduce the intimidation factor and bring in more onlookers.

Tip #2: Add an Interactive Element

Now that you have your clean design and welcoming atmosphere, you’ll need a value proposition to draw people in. That’s why we recommend adding a fun interactive element.

Interactive elements can technically be anything, but we recommend one that puts a spin on your product or service. Here are a few fun examples for different possible industries:

  • Paper: A paper airplane design station
  • Television: An interactive video wall where customers can film themselves live
  • Furniture: A relaxing area where tired passersby can sit and chat
  • Toys & Games: Host competitions where coworkers can face off

Tip #3: Encourage Returning Attendance

At trade shows, it’s always a good idea to invite return attendance. Since trade shows can last all day or multiple days, there’s a pretty good chance that potential customers and industry connections will pass by your booth at least a couple of times. This is especially true if you’re selling something, since attendants will often wait until later in the day (after they’ve seen other booths) to decide how to spend their money.

So remember: you don’t always have to close the first time someone comes to your booth. In fact, in the trade show environment, it will put some people off. Instead, make sure to place branded grab-n-go materials around your display, so potential customers have something to remember you by. If you’re taking an aggressive sales approach, you may even want to consider a business card with 10% off that attendants can hand out to the coworkers, friends, and family that they came with.
